Memories

You

Looking back, it is funny what we remember; what sticks in our minds after all these years. When we first move from High School to college, a job or the service, we feel so grown up; we remember being so childish back in high school. Careers come along and suddenly we find ourselves adults with new responsibilities and a whole new memory base. It is a new world and high school is little more than a faint blur. We mature and kids are replaced by grand kids, career goals are replaced by retirement plans and we start looking back at where we had been. We realize there is a lot more time behind us than ahead. We begin to put our memories in proper perspective. High school was a very defining time on our road of life and the friends we had then shared in the very foundation of our being. For most of us, it was a time of freedom. Life was forever and we were immune to all the pressures of the world. There is a certain contentment looking back at the good times we had and the friends who shared it. Lets look back together.

Memories by you

by Yours Truly:

I remember the old Ford convertible, before and after I painted it! Who said I painted it with a broom? Who could forget the McDonald's commercials that seemed to never die. "Let's rev up and lay a strip to McDonalds" That is what happens when adults try to write a script for kids. Remember when we skipped school and went to New Salem? Sending a postcard back to school was probably not a good idea! Then there was the "Great White Hunter" episode. Repairing the hole in the new carpet was probably the beginning of my remodeling career. My last high school memory was probably the most poignant. It was graduation ceremony and we were all in line at the Armory. Mr Tozer came up to me and whispered in my ear, "Dulany, you need to get out of line, you didn't pass Government!" You could have scraped me off the floor. I must have turned whiter than snow at Christmas. Then he laughed, patted me on the back, and with a grin bigger than Bubba at a hog roast, he laughed, "Gotcha" I guess that is what I deserved after forgetting his introductory speech at Lawrence Grade school. Yes friends, I admit it. I DID forget the speech. I'm just glad I had a copy in my pocket!

Dulany,  here's a dumb memory for you, just came to me when I saw Kevin Burke's name in your list.  He borrowed a rather special book from me our senior year, it is a suede leather bound, with gold leaf Shakespeare edition, there were two books my Great Aunt left to me.........I asked him once about it but he had no recollection, maybe it has come back to him in his old age???

[ ed note - See Kevin, I'm not the only one trying to contact you.]

In the 9th grade at Jefferson I tried out for cheerleading, missed my calculations on the running jump bit, probably didn't wear my glasses, landed right smack in the middle of Bob Richards and Art Handshy in the bleachers.....they both saved me.  Bob must have said something cute and he got whacks from Irv Smith for catching me.....now how crazy is that?  Shame on ole Irv!

I think deep in the heart of all of us lies that high school or junior high school or grade school child and  the memories of those periods of time in our lives should be getting sharper as we begin to forget what we did 5 minutes ago. Carla Hodge used to do cart wheels at Hazel Dell in her little crinolined skirts and I thought she just looked like an angel. I never could do them as pretty as she did, nor did I have all those pretty crinolines. I used to skip around the room in kindergarten holding hands with Lee Cumberworth, and Buddy Roberts walked me to school, half the time I was bawling as I didn't want to go. Buddy lived across the street and was constantly blowing his bugle. And Bob Richards and Sam Thomas walked me home from Hazel Dell.....but I wanted it to be Jack Mitchon. I laugh at myself when I remember those things.

Hi Dulany,

I'm sending you two pictures of Pat with Kix Brooks of the famed country singers, Brooks and Dunn.  Such excitement!  Kix, born in Louisiana, was inducted as a Louisiana Legend by Louisiana Public Broadcasting Assoc.  There were others inducted as well.  No one at LPBA (where Pat used to work) knew anything about country music, etc., so lucky Pat (what's new?) was drafted to be his aide-de-camp.  She spent to entire evening with him, first at the Governor's Mansion, then later at another location.  Of course she had a ball!  She said both Kix and his wife are down to earth, regular, nice people.  She even shared a beer with Kix while waiting behind stage...who would expect anything different from my sister?!  She also said his speech was the hit of the evening, but she can tell you more about that.  She'll probably kill me for sending this to you but then, it wouldn't be the first time!            Penny (Moore) Greek

Hi, This website is terrific! I don't see the names of any of my  close friends from the class of '64, but I sure see a lot of names I  recognize. My age-addled brain isn't coming up with any good memories  from SHS, although I did love my years there. Here's a brief bio since high school: after having travelled a lot and lived in several foreign countries, I lived and worked in Cambridge, MA and now live on Cape Cod  with my husband and dog. I have no children of my own, but 2 step  children and 2 step grandchildren. I quit working in 2000 to do a cross-country bike trip and now I spend my time painting landscapes in  oils. I hope to see more postings on this site. Christine Weisiger

Dulany: This is cool. You always outdo yourself. I'll commit to making a donation to you personally. I always am concerned about the hackers and identity theft. My wife is presently in a meeting with John Mullaney's mom. The six degrees of separation are only three degrees in your hometown. This looks like a good way for those that do not live in Springfield to know a means to get ahold of old friends. Thanks, Rich Berning

Classmates, it has been years--in fact decades--since I have seen all of you. I have been all over the world, and I just lost track of my roots. I enjoyed seeing your pictures. I didn't have any trouble picking you out either. My father, Roy Lessly, taught many of you. He is still living. He and my mother live right around the corner from me in Collinsville, VA, which is next to Martinsville, VA, the heart of NASCAR country. They are both 80, and they are doing quite well. He remembers all of you quite well. He often laughs about the time he almost kicked me and Herbie out of World Literature. We were telling jokes loud enough for our classmates to hear, but NOT loud enough for dad to hear. Remember that Herbie? I must admit that I got a bit weepy-eyed seeing so many of you. We all had a lot of fun at good ole SHS. I went back to visit it this summer, and I wandered the hallways. It felt good. I am sorry I couldn't join you at the reunion. Some day, maybe at our 50th, I will finally make one. I teach college, so it is difficult to take off during a semester. I look forward to seeing more pictures and to hearing about your lives. As you read through these postings, you should begin to realize the potential of this guestbook/comments page. But the value is only as great as your use of it. A simple: “Hi Guys – nice to see you all on the picture pages. Sorry I missed the reunion. I’m living in Springpatch, USA. -- Dulvany Scribner class of 64” OR: "Hi Jeff - Good to see you on here. Where are you and whatever happened to . . . . . . .?" The other necessity to make this page work is a commitment to check it regularly. What good is a posting if nobody reads it? Add the link to your favorites list or paste the link on your desktop and check it often. http://www.sriner.com/classreunion/web_ch_64.htm I will also use the page for comments or timely links as it is much easier to use than going into the web page generator and uploading a new page. So, leave a note, check back often and send me a picture in an E-mail or as hard copy in snail-mail so I can share it with your friends on the site. I am also looking for more pictures for the memories page. Dulany Sriner

Dear Dulany, Thanks for all the time and effort it took to put this site together! Your computer expertise is amazing. It was fun to read the comments from our classmates - especially Phyllis. I remember you, Phyllis AND your Dad! Nice to get an update on both of you! I have always enjoyed the class reunions I've attended and am glad "The Committee" works so well together. Thanks for helping us stay connected - to The Committee AND Dulany!!!! Sincerely, Nancy (Skadden) Small Feld Retired from teaching and living in Door County, WI Even though it's winter, it's beautiful here!

Below is a note from the webmaster of the class of 58 web site. There is a link to their site on the links page. If you type any message to them, be sure to type slowly and loudly because they are much older then we are. Dulany Hi Dulany, Thanks very much for the kind words. I looked at your site and saw a lot of family names that I remember. My brother, David Howarth, was in the class of 1961 and might possibly know even more of the faces. You are very generous to give all that time to your class. I know that it's a labor of love, but I can tell you from my experience that the class really enjoys it. I put a notice of your site on the class news page, and I hope you don't mind my little joke about our age differences. http://radio.weblogs.com/0130031/ All best wishes, Will Howarth '58

Extraordinary job, Delany and all the rest who helped. Although I didn't graduate with the class of '64, you are all "stored" in a tender place in my heart. It was a trauma for me to leave Springfield after my junior year and move to Detroit. I left a vacant class office (V.P.), a spot on the football team, a radio show on WCVS and at least one high school sweetheart. I went on with my life in Michigan, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Maine, and Washington, D.C. I went on with love. But after all these years, I realized that my heart never quite healed from losing SHS one year too soon. Maybe now it will. Thanks, Lewis (Skip) Rudolph
